Low-cost carrier to launch Boston in spring 2014

The Icelandic airline Wow Air says it may buy Boeing 757 or Airbus A321 jets to bring more cities in the US within range of Reykjavik. The low-cost carrier will launch a service to Boston, its first route beyond Europe, in spring 2014.

Building a US network would help Wow get a bigger share of the Icelandic tourism market, which grew 20% in 2012, says founder and CEO Skuli Mogensen in an interview.

Wow’s A320s have a range of 6,000 kilometres, which is 1,000km less than a Boeing 757-200ER, which can reach Florida.

“One of the reasons we’ve started with Boston is because it’s within range, but we are actively looking at what aircraft would be the most suitable for new, longer destinations,” the CEO said.

The 757 is the world’s longest single-aisle plane – and a major part of rival Icelandair’s fleet. However, production ended in 2004 and it is “getting outdated,” Mogensen said. Equipped with extra fuel tanks, the A321 would also be an “interesting opportunity,” he added.
