Atlanta is still top of the list but others are gaining
More than 101 million passengers used Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in 2015, an increase of 5.5% over 2014, keeping it at the world’s number-one spot.
Airports Council International’s 2015 World Airport Traffic Report explains that Atlanta is a major connecting hub and point of entry for North America, within a two-hour flight to 80% of the population of the United States. Atlanta has been at the top for 18 years.
Previously gaining on Atlanta was Beijing, but the world’s second busiest airport with 89.9 million passengers saw a smaller increase last year, at 4.4%.
The airport to watch out for at the moment is Dubai. The world’s sixth busiest airport in 2014, it is now third with more than 78 million passengers, up 10.7%. Dubai International is also now the globe’s busiest in terms of international traffic.
Worldwide passenger traffic rose 6.4% in 2015 to almost 7.2 billion. Despite current and future challenges like geopolitical unrest, terrorism and capacity, “history supports the long-run resiliency of the industry where connecting people, places, cultures and commerce is paramount in the shared mission of the aviation community,” said Angela Gittens, ACI World’s director general.
However, being stuck at the top of the list of the busiest airports isn’t always a good thing. In February, Atlanta airport said it would rather be referred to as the “world’s most-travelled airport”, as the word ‘busy’ has negative connotations.
