Technician killed in freak aircraft accident in India
A freak accident at an airport in India is being investigated in which a technician was sucked into the engine of an Airbus A319.
The technician, who was working for Air India at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji airport, was killed instantly. A Central Industry Security Force official said “the body has been badly mutilated”.
Many of the approximately 100 passengers who were on flight AI 619, which was ready to take off for Hyderabad, are said to have been traumatised by the incident on Wednesday evening.
The co-pilot is said to have mistaken a signal from ground staff and started the engine. It sucked in Ravi Subramanian, who was standing close by.
The airline’s chairman and managing director Ashwani Lohani said “we are deeply saddened and regret the tragic incident”. The accident is the latest in a string of technical glitches and other incidents for the loss-making carrier, including staff turning up late for flights.
