For seven years, 86-year-old has lived on Crystal Serenity
Shortly before Lee Wachtstetter’s husband died from cancer 18 years ago, he told her, “Don’t stop cruising.” She hasn’t. For the last seven years, the 86-year-old has been a permanent resident on the luxury cruise ship Crystal Serenity.
Known among the crew as Mama Lee, she pays $164,000 (around €142,000) a year to live on the 1,070-passenger vessel, selling her five-bedroom home to fund her cruising. She thinks she’s probably been to every country around the world that has a port.
“My husband introduced me to cruising,” she says. “Mason was a banker and real estate appraiser and taught me to love cruising. During our 50-year marriage we did 89 cruises. I’ve done nearly a hundred more and 15 world cruises.”
Wachtstetter says her family is supportive of her decision to live on a cruise ship. She sees her children and grandchildren whenever the ship docks in Miami.
