“Police and ambulance staff couldn’t get to the victim until later”

A female employee at the Kolmården zoo in central Sweden has been mauled to death in the wolf enclosure. The incident at 11am on Sunday morning occurred when the woman entered the enclosure, was surrounded and then attacked, the newspaper Aftonbladet writes. Emergency services were initially unable to get inside and rescue the woman.
“You can’t just go in to a pack of wolves,” Norrköping emergency services coordinator Jan Tengeborg said. “Police and ambulance staff couldn’t get close to the victim until later.”
A wolf expert at Sweden’s University of Agricultural Sciences, Olof Liberg, said that “it’s very unusual for something like this to happen, but it has happened before. Zoo animals aren’t afraid of humans and accidents can happen.” Wolves can be especially dangerous if a zookeeper goes in alone, he added.
