Flames and smoke surrounding Mação make it impossible to leave
As temperatures again intensify in Portugal, two large forest fires have cut off a town of 2,000 people in the centre of the country.
The mayor of Mação told the Lusa news agency: “It’s impossible to leave or to enter Mação because of the flames and the smoke.”
Rescuers have evacuated people from nearby villages from the blaze, which began late on Tuesday, but new fires are constantly starting in the area.
Wildfires near Pedrógão Grande in central Portugal in June killed 64 people and injured more than 250. The latest wave has injured 86 people. A large fire at the end of July has already destroyed more than 80% of the Mação municipality. More than 60 suspected arsonists have been arrested in Portugal this summer.
