A record 220 fires started in a single day in Portugal
High temperatures, dry conditions and strong winds are fanning the flames of wildfires in Portugal and on the French island of Corsica.
In Portugal, 1,800 firefighters are trying to stop around ten fires across the country, but due to the persistent weather further blazes are predicted. A record 220 fires started in a single day, Friday, said a civil protection agency spokeswoman.
Two of the worst are near the towns of Abrantes and Alvaiazere, where four planes, two helicopters and 250 vehicles are helping 800 firefighters on the ground.
More than 60 people were killed by wildfires in Portugal in June and more than 200 injured.
In Corsica, almost 1,000 people had to flee fires at the end of the week, while 2,000 hectares of scrubland was destroyed. A man has been arrested on suspicion of starting five fires in the town of Bastia.
