Cruise industry seems convinced that bigger is better
The cruise industry seems convinced that bigger is better. Giant players like Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Holland America will each unveil their largest vessels yet this year, and luxury lines such as Regent Seven Seas and Seabourn will also launch their biggest vessels ever.
Royal Caribbean’s 227,000-ton Harmony of the Seas will be the largest cruise ship ever, with a capacity of 5,497 passengers at double occupancy. Its maiden voyage is scheduled for May 22.
Somewhat smaller is the 930-passenger Viking Sea, the second oceangoing ship for river cruise giant Viking, its maiden voyage due on April 3.
USA Today publishes a guide to the new ships of 2016, with details on on-board features, home ports, itineraries and pricing. It also has a guide to new ships on order for the period up to 2022.
