44% more airport pairs where five low-costs go head-to-head
Five pan-European low-cost giants are intensifying the competition not only with Europe’s long-established legacy airlines but also with each other, anna.aero reports.
The five carriers (Norwegian, Ryanair, easyJet, Vueling, Wizz Air) are increasing the number of airport pairs where they are competing with each other by 44% over August 2014 to August 2016. That compares to overall route growth of 18% during the same period. At least two of the five will compete head-to-head on more than 230 routes in August 2016 – and of these, 17 have three of the five competing.
Among the most intense are Copenhagen-Malaga and Copenhagen-Alicante, where Norwegian, Ryanair and Vueling are all muscling in on the lucrative Nordic leisure market. Another intense route is CPH-Edinburgh, on which Norwegian is competing with Ryanair and easyJet.
The biggest competing pair is Ryanair vs. Vueling, which are going head-to-head on as many as 55 routes in summer 2016. By comparison, Norwegian is battling Ryanair on 23 routes, while Norwegian will fight easyJet on 22 routes, Vueling on 11 and Wizz Air on just 1 route.
