Tourists able to get more for their buck, pound, yuan
Tourists visiting Sweden this summer were able to get more kronor for their pounds, dollars and other currencies, helping to boost the number of visitors from countries such as the UK and China.
Swedish hotels saw 8.6% more overnight from foreign visitors in the June-to-August period, year-on-year, according to Visita, the trade association that represents the country’s hospitality industry.
While Norwegians and Germans made up the largest proportions of foreign visitors, Sweden saw 20.3% more overnight stays by British tourists 37.5% more overnights by Chinese tourists.
Researchers pointed to the weakening of the krona in recent months as a contributing factor for the trend. A year ago $100 would have bought around 700 Swedish kronor; this summer it was well over 800. That is especially welcome in a country known for its high prices.
