Increased threat linked to international terrorist organisations
Tourists planning trips to Morocco have been told there is a new high threat of terrorism in the country, as the UK’s Foreign Office changes its travel advice for the North African nation this week.
The UK is not advising against travel to Morocco, but it says that attacks could be indiscriminate, including areas frequented by foreigners.
It says that the authorities there warn of an increased threat linked to a growing number of Moroccans sympathetic or belonging to terrorist organisations operating in Syria, Iraq and Libya.
Many hotels and popular tourist sites have security measures in place, the Foreign Office said, and additional security personnel may be visible.
Seventeen people were killed and 25 injured in an explosion in Marrakech, at the Argana Restaurant in Djema el-Fna Square, in April 2011.
