NAACP warns black travellers after “disturbing incidents”
American Airlines says it is “disappointed” about an advisory issued by a leading civil rights group warning black travellers about a series of “disturbing incidents”.
The world’s largest airline, which serves half a million passengers every day, pledged to repair the damage to its reputation caused by the “national travel advisory” issued by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the US’s oldest and best-known civil rights organisation.
The NAACP said there had been a several recent examples of “disrespectful, discriminatory or unsafe conditions” for African Americans traveling on the airline.
“The NAACP for several months now has been monitoring a pattern of disturbing incidents reported by African American passengers, specific to American Airlines,” it said.
“In light of these confrontations, we have today taken the action of issuing national advisory alerting travellers – especially African Americans – to exercise caution, in that booking and boarding flights on American Airlines could subject them disrespectful, discriminatory or unsafe conditions.”
The airline’s chief executive, Doug Parker, wrote in a memo to employees, “We do not and will not tolerate discrimination of any kind,” adding: “We have reached out to the NAACP and are eager to meet with them to listen to their issues and concerns.”
The NAACP cites four cases. One involved the Rev Dr William Barber, a civil rights activist and president of the NAACP’s North Carolina branch, who was escorted off a flight in 2016 after reacting to two verbally abusive white passengers, who were allowed to stay on the flight. The other incidents also involved black passengers being kicked off flights after allegedly being singled out.
