Deadline approaching to vote for inspirational stories
The June 14 deadline to vote in the World Responsible Tourism Awards 2013 is approaching. The awards were founded in 2004 “to surprise and inspire tourists and the tourism industry by the best of the best in responsible tourism – tourism that creates better places to live in and visit”.
The aim, the organisers say, is “to celebrate the shining stars of responsible tourism – the individuals, organisations and destinations working innovatively with local cultures, communities and biodiversity. But more than that, we want their examples to inspire others.”
There is a rigorous judging process, working with partners in the tourism industry, but rather than picking the nominations themselves the organisers rely on travellers and the industry to nominate “tourism ventures with exciting stories to share”.
The overall winner last year, Reality Tours and Travel, shows how it is possible for tourists to tour a slum in India in a responsible way. Established in 2005, they offer city and village tours in Mumbai and beyond. This award was for their educational Dharavi Slum Tours.
