“World’s first VR travel search and booking experience” is made
The VR experience could soon change the way travellers shop for and buy trips, helping airlines and other travel companies become next-generation retailers, the travel-tech firm Amadeus suggests. Its subsidiary Navitaire has unveiled “the world’s first virtual reality travel search and booking experience”.
The innovation allows travellers to ‘visit’ a destination, search for flights, walk onto a plane to select their seat, look at rental cars and pay for the whole trip – all without leaving virtual reality.
Justin Wilde, a user experience developer at Navitaire, which provides technology and business solutions to the airline and travel industry, completed the first booking using his VR search and booking web application at the company’s offices in Salt Lake City. However, the tech is still in the project phase, with a patent pending.
“We live in a 3D world, why shouldn’t we shop for travel that way?” was the idea that inspired Wilde. “I see a future in which the internet will be a 3D experience and everyone will have their own portable 3D headsets.”
