Branson: IAG takeover of bmi would limit consumer choice
In a statement released on Sunday, Virgin Atlantic Airways boss Richard Branson reemphasized his view that IAG’s takeover of the British airline bmi would limit consumer choice. He said that Virgin would therefore be appealing against the European Union’s decision to approve the deal.
Virgin had tried to buy the loss-making carrier itself, but the European Commission ruled that concessions from IAG – the owner of British Airways and Iberia – were good enough to address competition concerns. These concessions include a pledge to give up landing slots at London’s Heathrow airport. In his statement, Branson said that Virgin would bid for the slots being put up for sale.
