Virgin Atlantic to enter short-haul market

Move puts it head-to-head with BA on UK domestic route

Virgin Atlantic has announced that it will enter the short-haul market from March 2013 when it launches a three-times-daily service between London Heathrow and Manchester in the UK. This will put it in head-to-head competition with British Airways on this domestic trunk route. With three wet-leased Airbus A319s, the airline will use two Heathrow slots currently leased to Cyprus Airways so that its long-haul schedules in London are not impacted.
Virgin Atlantic stresses that around 65% of passengers travelling from Manchester to London Heathrow connect to onward flights.
