New initiative Aeromobile being tested on Airbus A330s
Passengers flying Virgin Atlantic will soon be able to use their own mobile phones up in the air, instead of having to rely on expensive onboard satellite phones. The airline says that its new initiative Aeromobile will involve making calls from a mobile that will cost about the same as roaming abroad. Calls will connect to the aircraft’s own network, ensuring there is no interference to the plane’s electronics. However, all mobiles must be turned off for take-off and landing.
The system is now being tested on Virgin Atlantic’s Airbus A330s and Aeromobile should be installed on 13 aircraft by the end of 2012.
