Scandinavian-style line christened first ship in May
Back in May, the 930-passenger Viking Star floated memorably along the waterfront of Bergen, Norway, during a nearly two-hour christening ceremony. That was Viking Ocean Cruises’ first ocean liner in a fleet more used to river boats. Now the line is planning other cruise ships like it.
Viking and Italian shipyard Fincantieri have announced a deal to build two more of the 930-passenger Star-class ships, with delivery anticipated in mid-2018 and late 2020.
The company, an offshoot of the Viking River Cruises line, already has its second and third ships in construction, plus an option for a fourth.
The cruise ships are said to have Scandinavian modern décor, a snow room and a restaurant that offers Nordic delicacies like waffles, smoked fish and sweet rolls with cloudberry jam.
Viking Ocean’s second and third ships, Viking Sky and Viking Sea, are expected to start sailing in 2016 and 2017, while the Star is now sailing between Venice and Istanbul.
