Private security staff allegedly smuggled Sri Lankans to US and UK
Police are investigating 13 private security staff who worked at Vienna Airport, over allegations that they smuggled refugees, mainly Sri Lankans, through security onto flights bound for the United States and the UK.
“We know of 10 trafficking trips, meaning 10 flights between last autumn and February,” a spokesman for Austrian prosecutors in the town of Korneuburg said.
He refused to name the security companies involved, but security firm G4S said one of its employees was under suspicion and had been sacked. It is working closely with authorities on the case.
It is not yet clear how many people have been smuggled, but the security guards allegedly pocketed between €7,000 and €9,000 per person, the spokesman said. The scheme included using flight tickets issued in the name of friends and acquaintances.
