Varying air travel trends in Sweden


Airports see stronger international traffic, weaker domestic
The number of passengers using airports in Sweden continues to rise in 2016. The latest statistics show a 7% increase during the first quarter of 2016 compared to last year, according to airport operator Swedavia, but with growing differences between international and domestic traffic.
International air travel during the first three months rose by 9% (to 5,336,000), domestic travel by 4% (to 3,222,000). Of Swedavia’s ten airports, Malmö (487,000) and Åre Östersund (141,000) saw the greatest increases, with passenger volumes at both up 10%.
The operator’s two biggest airports also saw big increases, by 8% at both Stockholm Arlanda (to 5,262,000) and Göteborg Landvetter (to 1,356,000). About 50,000 landings were made in scheduled and charter operations at the ten airports, a 3% increase.
Figures for March show that international/domestic variation becoming wider. The total passenger number at the ten airports was 3,180,000, up 6% compared to March 2015, with international traffic up 10%, domestic up 1%.
