Probable that Trump administration will expand ban
It is probable that the Trump administration will expand a ban on laptops on flights to the US from some countries in Europe, officials say. An announcement on the matter is imminent.
At the same time, investigators are looking at how to prevent lithium batteries stored in the hold from exploding during the flight. Department of Homeland Security officials are to meet airline industry representatives today to discuss security issues.
Such an expansion of the ban would severely impact the business of transatlantic carriers, such as Norwegian, British Airways, United, Delta and American Airlines.
The Department of Homeland Security “hasn’t made a decision but we continue to evaluate the threat environment and have engaged in discussions with airline representatives and other stakeholders about the threat,” department spokesman Dave Lapan said.
Peter Goelz, a former head of the US National Transportation Safety Board, said a major expansion of the ban on electronics “is going to represent a major logistical problem for airlines”, while more money will have to be spent on improving screening.
