Washington considers widening ban on electronic gadgets
Washington is thinking about widening its ban on electronic devices that are larger than a smartphone in the cabin of flights entering the US, to flights from Europe.
The Trump administration suddenly imposed new rules last month for some US-bound aircraft from countries in the Middle East, out of fear they could be used to conceal bombs. Devices such as laptops, iPads, tablets and e-readers cannot be carried on board and must instead be checked in to the hold.
The move prompted some airlines to introduce new services, such as personalised laptop handling and laptop loans on board.
Now security chiefs in Europe and the UK have been put on alert that the US is planning to extend its laptop ban to incoming flights from some parts of Europe.
