“Best hotels” in each Nordic and Baltic country listed by TripAdvisor
In TripAdvisor’s annual user ratings of hotels in most of the countries around the world, individual boutique properties dominate the top five positions in Scandinavia and the Baltics ahead of chain hotels.
In Sweden, top position is reserved for a hotel outside the capital: Upper House in Gothenburg. One guest says: “Bask in the pleasure of being whisked up to your own private check-in experience, glass of bubbly in hand. You are made to feel special.”
Next come two properties in Stockholm, the Lydmar Hotel and the Hotel Rival, followed by Hotel J in Nacka and the Stora in Umea.
In Demark, Hotel D’Anglaterre is top, with a guest saying: “Right in the middle of everything in Copenhagen. This beautiful hotel makes you feel like you have stepped back into history – without neglecting the luxuries of modern living!”
In second and third are stately properties outside the capital, namely the Hotel Koldingfjord in Kolding and Skallerup Seaside Resort in Hjoerring. These are followed by Charlottehaven in Copenhagen and Hotel Hesselet in Nyborg.
“Lovely in every way,” is the headline description of the Solstrand Hotel & Bad in Osoyro, which heads the list for Norway. “Fabulous views from the beautifully landscaped gardens. Professional and friendly service. And the outdoor heated pool overlooking the fjord is just stunning.”
In Krokkleiva, the Kleivstua Hotel is second nationwide. The best hotel in Oslo is The Thief, which “oozes sex appeal”. Also in the top five are Venabu Fjellhotell og Hytter in rural eastern Norway and, in Alesund, the Clarion Collection Hotel Bryggen.
For Finland, the top five are more predictable, the top four being in Helsinki and chain properties in third and fourth places (Scandic Paasi and Radisson Blu Plaza, respectively). First is the Fabian Hotel, second the Hotel Haven. Fifth is Hotel Iso-Syote in Lapland.
In the Baltics, only one hotel in the top-five lists for each of the three countries is outside a capital city, the IDW Esperanza Resort in Trakai, which places second in Lithuania and is described as “a perfect honeymoon”. Kempinski Hotel Cathedral Square tops the list in Lithuania, while in Latvia, Neiburgs narrowly beats Burgs. And in Estonia, Swissotel beats all of the country’s outstanding boutique hotels.
