United Nations aviation agency holds “exciting” pilot contest

The United Nations’ aviation agency, the International Civil Aviation Organisation, is so concerned that a worldwide shortage of pilots is approaching that it has launched a competition on YouTube to attract young people into aviation. The video attempts to “excite young people about becoming an aviation professional.” The winners will go to the World Aviation Training Conference and Tradeshow in Orlando, Florida, in April.
If, as forecasts predict, the number of flights is expected to double to 50 million a year by 2030, then the number of aircraft worldwide will triple to 151,000. This means that the number of licensed pilots should increase from 460,000 in 2010 to more than 980,000 by 2030.
