Men arrested when Silja ferry docks in Stockholm
Two young men are being held by Swedish prosecutors ahead of their trial for the rape last week of a girl on a student party cruise between Stockholm and Turku in Finland.
Both aged 19, the men were arrested when the Silja Line (owned by Tallink Group) ferry M/S Galaxy docked in the Swedish capital on Wednesday. Three others were later released.
About 1,700 students were on the Fun Cruises party ship. Police accompanied the revellers to keep control, but because passengers aged 18 and over can buy duty-free alcohol – a big discount for highly taxed Nordic travellers – the route is popular for heavy drinking.
Lawyers for the men held say their clients are disappointed they have not been given a chance to give their side of the story. But, according to press reports, one of the alleged attackers has a previous conviction while another is under investigation for aiding and abetting a murder in Stockholm.
