Turtles delay flights at JFK airport

Air traffic blocked by 100 turtles trying to cross the runway

The flight delays were about 15 minutes only, yesterday morning. But the airport authorities had to remove the turtles one by one and help them cross the runway.
This is an event that takes place once a year, when the turtles go for a stride to lay their eggs, during the great migration season. The little armoured creatures were identified as diamondback terrapin turtles.
Similar incidents happened in 2009. But, according to the FAA National Wildlife Strike Database, 18 “encounters” happened between diamondback terrapins and planes in the US from 1990 to 2007. No planes were damaged.
