Old Airbus sunk to the bottom of the Aegean
A 36-year-old Airbus A300 has been plunged to the bottom of the Aegean Sea in an attempt to boost tourism – to revive Turkey’s faltering tourism industry and become a diving reef.
The 47-ton, 54m aircraft was bought for around €82,000 and was submerged at the weekend off the coast of Kusadasi, western Turkey, with people and passing ships stopping to watch.
The plane now lies 23 metres below the surface. Three other planes have also been sunk off the Turkish coast.
Turkey’s tourism industry is suffering from security worries and plunging numbers of Russian tourists. The number of foreign visitors to the country fell nearly 30% in April.
