Turkey presses ahead with transport megaprojects

Istanbul is focal point for many of Turkey’s megaprojects
Despite a slowing economy, falling tourist numbers and political instability, Turkey is pressing ahead with several massive infrastructure projects. There are worries it may not be able to complete these projects on time.
The megaprojects are worth a total of almost €22 billion over the coming years and are believed to have been one of the sources of friction between President Erdogan and his outgoing prime minister Ahmet Davutoglu.
They include a third airport for Istanbul with an annual capacity of 150 million passengers, worth €10.3 billion. Due to open in early 2018, it would replace Istanbul Ataturk Airport, which would then be closed to commercial air traffic.
Other projects include a third bridge over the Bosphorus Strait, due to open this August; the underground Eurasia Tunnel that will also link Istanbul’s European and Asian sides by road; the €9.6 billion Izmit Bay Bridge, the world’s fourth longest suspension bridge, which will connect Istanbul with the Aegean province of Izmir; a commuter train connection in Istanbul; the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars Railway; and the 14.7km-long Ovit Highway Tunnel that will connect north-eastern Anatolia with the south-eastern provinces, and all the way on to Iran and Central Asia.
Turkey wants to position itself as a trade and transportation centre – and the biggest air transit hub between Europe and the Middle East and Central Asia with 200 million passengers a year. Erdogan has chosen Transport Minister Binali Yildirim to succeed Davutoglu as prime minister.
