Tui Group says it is investing in Cape Verde and Bulgaria
Tui Group says it is investing in Cape Verde and Bulgaria as alternatives to North Africa and Turkey. The operator giant is seeing a 40% drop in bookings to Turkey this summer due to concerns over terrorism.
Until recently Turkey had been especially popular with German and Russian tourists. But demand has slumped since a suicide bomber killed 10 Germans in central Istanbul in January and the shooting down of a Russian military plane late last year.
Turkey is offering jet fuel subsidies in an effort to boost tourism. But Tui expects to send only 1 million tourists there this year, compared with 2 million in a typical year. The group usually sends around 14% of its customers to Turkey.
Tui has also seen a sharp fall in demand for Tunisia and Egypt, with tourists instead shifting to Spain, especially the Canary Islands, and Greece. However, Tui believes demand will return to North Africa, at some stage.
