Dutch competition authorities investigate possibility of price fixing

Europe’s “big two” tour operators are under investigation for allegedly being part of a price-fixing arrangement in the Dutch market. The Netherlands Competition Authority (NMA) is conducting a probe into the businesses of TUI Travel and Thomas Cook in the country. Both operators confirmed that the investigation was taking place, but chose not to comment further.

“Thomas Cook confirms that its Dutch subsidiary has had an inspection by the Dutch competition authorities (NMA) regarding the pricing of short-haul overseas holidays in Holland,” a Thomas Cook Group spokesperson commented. “Thomas Cook is co-operating fully with the NMA.” A spokeswoman for TUI confirmed that TUI Netherlands was fully complying with an investigation looking into “possible illegal price agreements” and was confident that the outcome would not be damaging to the company.
