Early exit for favourite teams will be good for business

Travel agents in European countries think an early exit for their favourite teams will be good for business. Agents are bracing themselves for the usual predictions of a summer slowdown as World Cup fever takes hold.

In England, the managing director of online travel agency Bookable Holidays, Jason Dwyer, admitted he was hoping the England team would be “kicked out soon”.

“We’ve seen it before – the whole nation gets behind England and booking holidays takes a back seat,” he said. “The sooner we get knocked out the better. If England go all the way, it’ll be more of a ‘lates market’ and we’ll be offering even more ridiculous discounts this summer.”

Anthony Goord, owner of Plymouth-based Peter Goord Travel, agreed, saying that business had already started to decline. “The first week in June has been excellent and this week all of a sudden it seems to have really wound down.

In a TTG poll, 72% of respondents said they expected to see a sales slump during the World Cup.

However, the cruise sector seems to have avoided a dip in sales after announcing plans to screen all games live on a number of ships.

Graham Dullop, manager at Cruise Club International, said the slowdown he had expected had not materialised. “We’re not seeing any drop-off. Traditionally this would happen, but the number of cruise lines that will be showing the matches has prevented a tail-off.”
