New details emerge about attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils
There have been two attacks in Spain’s Catalonia region involving people driving cars at crowds of tourists at high-speed.
People of at least 24 nationalities are reported to be among the victims of yesterday’s terror attacks in Spain, which killed 13 people and injured more than 100.
Tourists visiting Barcelona from Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Ireland, Greece, Australia, China, Pakistan, Venezuela, Algeria, Peru, Hong Kong, Taiwan and the Philippines are among the victims.
France has said that as many as 26 of its nationals were injured, 11 of them seriously, and one was killed in the attack.
On Thursday at 16:50, a white van drove at high speed down Las Ramblas, a part-pedestrianised boulevard in central Barcelona. The driver swerved to hit as many people as possible before running away.
About eight hours later, an Audi A3 deliberately rammed pedestrians in the seaside resort town of Cambrils, 110 kilometres southwest of Barcelona. Six civilians and a police officer were injured.
Five attackers, some wearing suicide belts, were then shot dead by police and controlled explosions were carried out.
One person has been arrested in the town of Alcanar and two have been arrested in Ripoll. A man has also been shot dead after driving into a police checkpoint on the edge of Barcelona. The night before the attacks, an explosion destroyed a house in Alcanar, killing one person and wounding others.
