Malaysian tribes blame fatal earthquake on naked photos
Tribal leaders in Malaysia are blaming an earthquake that killed 16 people on a group of Western tourists who took naked photos of themselves on sacred Mount Kinabalu.
Two Canadians, a Dutch citizen and a Briton have been detained. They were among a group of 10 tourists who allegedly stripped for a photo session on the mountain, posting the snaps on social media.
They could face almost a year in prison if convicted. However, Kadazan-Dusun tribal leaders say they would accept the heads of 10 buffalo as an alternative to the punishment. They believe that souls of the departed rest on the mountain before the Day of Judgment.
One week after the group took the photos, a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck eight kilometres south of the 4,100-metre summit on Malaysian Borneo. More than 100 climbers were temporarily trapped on the mountain after the quake.
