Tourist dies in Malaysia while snorkelling

Victim was allegedly in area off-limits to swimmers

A tourist has died after being hit by a boat’s propeller while diving near a group of popular resort islands in Malaysia. Madeline Jayne, 25, from the UK, was struck while diving off Pulau Perhentian Island in the South China Sea. She received severe injuries to her legs and lower body and died on the way to hospital.
Jayne had been swimming with an Australian tourist who was also injured in the accident, receiving injuries to his legs and stomach. The couple were in an area off-limits to swimmers, according to police, and were hit as they were surfacing.
“The two victims and two other friends were diving outside the safe zone and were not wearing safety jackets,” a police chief superintendent told the Bernama news agency.
The Perhentian Islands are loved by tourists for their sandy beaches and clear seas, home to many species of tropical fish and coral reefs.
