At least four offices to close, including one in Stockholm
Just days after Malaysia announced that at least four Tourism Malaysia offices abroad would close with immediate effect, including one in Stockholm, now the news is that offices throughout the country itself will close immediately.
The reason is to avoid job duplication with state agencies in promoting tourist attractions, Tourism Malaysia says.
On January 14, the tourism ministry said that at least four Tourism Malaysia offices would close abroad, namely in New York, Perth, Johannesburg and Stockholm, following the termination of Malaysia Airlines services there.
Yet the tourism and culture minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz still projects that 30.5 million tourists will visit Malaysia throughout this year compared with 27 million last year.
The minister says that the closure of the 14 tourism offices does not involve the termination of staff as they will be absorbed into the ministry’s headquarters and other departments.
But the Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services is calling on the government to review its decision as some 232 staff have been left in the dark following the sudden news.
