SAS, Finnair, KLM, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines…
Qantas has been named the world’s safest airline for the third year in a row, according to global airline analysts AirlineRatings.com, which monitors flight companies around the world. SAS and Finnair are both named in the top 20.
The Australian flag carrier is the safest airline out of 407 companies monitored, with an “extraordinary” fatality-free record, the ratings site says.
The website rates airlines based on a number of factors, looking into audits run by aviation industry bodies, government reports, airline fatality and incident records and how well the carriers are run.
The world’s airlines carried a record 3.6 billion passengers on 34 million flights in 2015. The top 20 safest airlines in alphabetical order are:
Air New Zealand, Alaska Airlines, All Nippon Airlines, American Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways, Emirates, Etihad Airways, EVA Air, Finnair, Hawaiian Airlines, Japan Airlines, KLM, Lufthansa, Qantas, Scandinavian Airline System, Singapore Airlines, Swiss, United Airlines, Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Australia.
Passengers on a budget will want to know that the safest low-cost airlines are (in alphabetical order): Aer Lingus, Flybe, HK Express, Jetblue, Jetstar Australia, Thomas Cook, TUI Fly, Virgin America, Volaris and Westjet.
Of the 407 airlines surveyed, 148 have the top seven-star safety ranking, but almost 50 have just three stars or less. There are 10 airlines with only one star and these airlines are from Indonesia, Nepal and Surinam.
