Driver kills teenager, injures 22 others in NY tourist area
A driver who ploughed into pedestrians in New York’s Times Square yesterday said he “heard voices”, according to police.
He mowed his car along three blocks of pavement, killing Alyssa Elsman, aged 18, and injuring 22 other people. The tragedy is not believed to be terror-related.
Richard Rojas, 26, a US navy veteran, is now in custody. After being arrested, he shouted, “You were supposed to shoot me! I wanted to kill them.”
Times Square was busy as usual with tourists and visitors when the Honda sedan jumped the kerb at 45th Street and Broadway, driving at high speed before crashing.
A ticket agent and a worker at the Planet Hollywood restaurant were among those who helped police detain Rojas. Initial tests are positive for drugs, according to press reports.
