Vast majority of residents of Aalborg and Copenhagen feel safe
It may not compare to the Danish capital Copenhagen for international acclaim, but Aalborg is home to the most contented people in Europe, a new study by the European Commission has found.
As many as 72% of Aalborg residents are “very satisfied” with their lives, while another 24% are “fairly satisfied”. The second happiest city in Europe is Copenhagen, according to the Quality of Life in European Cities study, where 67% of residents are “very satisfied” and 24% are “fairly satisfied”. The other cities in the top five are Reykjavik, Zurich and Graz.
Perhaps the secret is safety, as 96% of people living in Aalborg feel safe in the city, compared to 95% of people in Copenhagen. In Aalborg, 91% of respondents also said that most people in the city could be trusted, putting it behind only Oulu in Finland as Europe’s most trusting city.
Or the secret could be its size, as Aalborg has just over 110,000 residents, making it Denmark’s fourth biggest city. One resident, who moved there from Romania six years ago, told The Local: “Even though Aalborg has 200,000 people, it doesn’t feel like it. It has a small-city feel and you can really breathe here,” he said. “It’s easy to get involved and there is a very high level of acceptance and inclusion.”
