Thomas Cook evacuates tourists holidaying in Africa
Thousands of tourists holidaying in The Gambia are being evacuated by Thomas Cook as the UK alters its travel advice due to the risk of serious unrest in the West African country.
The tour operator plans to fly 985 package holiday customers back to the UK over the next 48 hours, while another 2,500 flight-only customers will be given the “earliest available flight”.
Travel advice in London now advises against all but essential travel to The Gambia, where a 90-day state of emergency has been declared over disputed elections.
“We will operate a programme of additional flights into Banjul airport over the next 48 hours,” Thomas Cook says in a statement, “including four additional flights on Wednesday 18 January.”
