Hotel thieves in France posed as guests from Gulf states
Two men have been arrested in France, accused of stealing safes from hotel rooms by posing as tourists from the Gulf countries. To get access to the rooms, they would simply tell reception staff they had lost their keys.
The thieves used a stethoscope to listen at the door to make sure no one was coming, then used tools such as a hammer and chisel to take out the safes, which they carried out in suitcases. High-end hotels in Paris and on the French Riviera were targeted.
Identified by surveillance cameras, the two suspects, aged 56 and 31, were arrested at a hotel in the French town of Saint-Etienne. Police found jewellery, upmarket clothes and currency worth about €80,000.
