Railway buffs will want to visit Gävle in September
Railway buffs in Sweden will want to see a rare Swiss locomotive when it goes on show at the Sveriges Järnvägsmuseum (Swedish Railway Museum) in Gävle, about 170 kilometres north of Stockholm this month.
The green “Crocodile” electric locomotive, built in 1925 to run across the Alps on the Gotthard Bahn, is already on its journey to the museum from Olten, Switzerland. In Sweden it will be part of a celebration of a century of electric trains.
Its eight-day journey to Sweden incudes being hauled to Germany, pulled by another locomotive to Poland and transferred to a cargo vessel to Sweden. It will arrive in Gävle on September 7 and will return to Switzerland on September 22.
“Generations of Swedish children grew up with a toy model of our Crocodile and the model today is in the bedrooms of many Swedish children and adults,” Swiss rail company SBB said on its website.
