Swedish Migration Agency in talks with ship owners
Sweden is running out of space to house the masses of refugees arriving in the country. Its latest possible solution to the problem is to temporarily house them on cruise ships.
The move would ease Sweden’s urgent asylum accommodation shortage as winter sets in, explains Willis Åberg, the Swedish Migration Agency’s housing chief. The agency is discussing the issue with several shipping companies, he said.
“I expect that cruise ships will provide thousands of places for refugees,” he said. “These ships should serve as proper asylum accommodation where asylum seekers can be throughout the period of investigation, which is usually about one year.”
The vessels would be moored where there are sufficiently sized harbours, such as Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö, Oskarshamn, Uddevalla and Gävle.
“I am optimistic that we will have the first ship ready before Christmas,” he told the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet.
