TUI Group publishes new sustainability report
TUI customers booked 6.3 million “greener and fairer holidays” last year, the tour operator giant reveals in a new progress report for its sustainability strategy.
The group’s Better Holidays, Better World report suggests that “2016 was the year that sustainable tourism became mainstream”. The 6.3 million greener holidays were booked in 1,170 hotels certified to a sustainability standard.
Holidaymakers also participated in 846,000 TUI Collection excursions, which focus on sustainability and benefits to local communities, the report says.
A total of €6.6 million was raised for research, charity and sustainability projects in holiday destinations, particularly via the TUI Care Foundation, which uses tourism to bring about positive change in holiday destinations.
Sustainability is increasingly important to TUI customers, according to a recent TUI Group study with over 3,000 participants in Europe. Sustainability can be a deciding factor in holiday choices, the research shows, and customers want more information about it when it comes to booking.
“For many people in the world tourism is the key to a more prosperous life”, says Fritz Joussen, TUI’s chief executive. “As the leading tourism group worldwide it is our responsibility to strengthen the positive effects of tourism. Therefore, TUI will continue to take a leading role in strengthening transparency and responsibility in the tourism sector.”
