Three passengers overheard discussing terrorist activities
No explosives have been found on an easyJet flight from Slovenia to London that was diverted to Cologne-Bonn when three passengers were overheard discussing terrorist activities.
The three British men, aged 31, 38 and 48, none of whom is known to security services, remain in police custody in Germany.
The diversion of the Airbus A319 from Ljubljana prompted a major police operation at Cologne-Bonn and hours of delays.
The pilot diverted the flight when passengers told cabin crew that “several men were talking about terrorist activities”, according to a police spokesman. The men allegedly used the word bomb or explosive.
The 151 passengers were evacuated down emergency slides. Bomb squad officers later blew up a backpack belonging to the three suspects outside the plane.
Germany is on high alert following a number of jihadist attacks in Europe. The previous weekend, the three-day Rock am Ring rock festival, was evacuated due to the fear of an attack that later proved to be false.
