Barcelona-El Prat, Alicante, Valencia expect chaos

A strike call by workers at the ground handling company Swissport is likely to throw Spanish airports such as Barcelona-El Prat, Alicante, Valencia and possibly also Malaga and Madrid-Barajas into chaos this weekend.

The industrial action could impact the rest of Spain’s airports and hit airlines like SAS, Lufthansa, Emirates, TAP, Swiss, Austrian, American Airlines, Transaero and others.

SAS says it expects to implement all its flights but adds that delays, especially with luggage, should be expected. SAS flies from Stockholm, Copenhagen and Oslo to both Alicante and Barcelona and from Oslo to Valencia.

The ongoing labour row has been active for some time now at Swissport Spain and it is reaching boiling point. The union Comisiones Obreras has called an indefinite strike from August 10th onwards.

The action will be particularly disruptive at Barcelona-El Prat. Nearly 900 Swissport employees are in charge of running handling operations for several airlines operating international flights.

The labour row first flared up last November. A deal was struck, but according to the union the company did not fulfil its obligations.
