Group’s airlines carried 8.6mn pax in April, down 0.6%

Airlines in the Lufthansa Group carried a total of 8.6 million passengers in April, 0.6% fewer than in the same month last year. The number of flights was 6.1% lower.

Lufthansa explained the lower number of flights by, among other things, the deployment of larger aircraft in the context of the group’s ongoing fleet modernisation.

An average of 79.5% of passenger seats were taken in April, representing a year-on-year improvement in the load factor of 1.3 percentage points. Capacity was 1.2% down, while sales rose slightly, by 0.4%.

The main reason for the drop in the group’s traffic performance in April was the strike by the Vereinigung Cockpit pilots’ union on April 2 to 4, Lufthansa said. Around 3,800 Lufthansa flights were unable to operate during this period.

As a result, the number of passengers carried by Lufthansa and Germanwings, two airlines affected by the strike, fell in April by 2.7% to 6.1 million passengers. The decline in capacity and sale resulted mainly from the strike.

Around 1.5 million passengers flew with Swiss during the month, which was 3% more than last April, and Austrian carried 1 million passengers, 8.3% more than the year before.
