Strike cancels important human rights conference

Oslo Freedom Forum postponed to later in the year

A major international event due to take place in Oslo has had to be cancelled because of a strike among hotel employees in Norway.

VIPs scheduled to fly in for the Oslo Freedom Forum, an international human rights conference due to start today, had included Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, former Russian oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky and members of the Russian punk protest band Pussy Riot.

The Grand Hotel in Oslo said the strike meant it would not be able to host it.

“Urgent: A Norwegian Hotel Strike has forced us to cancel the 2014 Oslo Freedom Forum,” the event’s organisers announced on Twitter. “We are devastated and heartbroken.”

The event may be rescheduled for October.
