Vasa warship attracts 40% more visitors than in 2006
A record number of visitors toured one of Sweden’s most popular attractions in 2016, with exactly 1,341,676 people lining up to see the Vasa warship in Stockholm. That is up 40% since 2006 and 2.2% up on 2015.
The museum houses the patched-up remains of the legendary vessel, which sank on its maiden voyage in 1628 and was taken out of the water in the 1960s. It is the world’s most visited maritime museum.
TripAdvisor has given it a boost in recent years, entering the review site’s top ten museums in the world for the first time in 2015. Most visitors come from abroad.
But some are yet to be converted. While one TripAdvisor reviewer says it is “like looking through a time machine”, another comments: “Didn’t go in, it seemed like a lot of money to see a ship museum. I read a book about the ship in the gift shop. Didn’t see a need to wait in a long line to see the museum.”
