Around 650,000 pax (up 30%) to spend €63 million
Stockholm is growing in popularity as a cruise destination. This year, the region will be visited by 270 cruise ships carrying a record 650,000 passengers, up 30% on last year.
The cruise season begins on April 30 with the arrival of the 103-metre long National Geographic Orion at Skeppsbron.
It will be the first of 270 vessels to call at Ports of Stockholm, of which a record 75 will be ‘turnarounds’ – vessels that begin or end their cruises in the city. Passengers then often spend an extra day and night on land, benefiting the tourist industry even further.
New to Stockholm this year are the cruise liners Norwegian Getaway, also the largest vessel this year, MSC Fantasia and a New Year cruise where Saga Sapphire has chosen to call at the Swedish capital.
“This year the cruise passengers will spend a total of around €63 million and cruise passengers play a major role for both the tourist industry and the entire Stockholm region,” says Thomas Andersson, chief executive of Visit Stockholm.
Henrik Ahlqvist, cruise marketing manager at Ports of Stockholm, adds: “Stockholm is very popular and counts as one of the ‘big five’ together with Helsinki, Tallinn, St Petersburg and Copenhagen.”
