More pax go ashore and for longer time than Europe average

Ports of Stockholm is anticipating an estimated 274 cruise ships this year, bringing a total of about 470,000 passengers. The numbers continue the traffic build-up from a record 2013 season.

A recent survey showed that 97% of passengers go ashore in Stockholm and spend an average of 5.9 hours on land, compared to a European average of 87% and 4.8 hours.

Stockholm Cruise Network project manager Claudia Quas said 36 ships will use the city as a turnaround port throughout the season. The city is developing a reputation as a luxury embarkation port with cruise lines including Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Silversea Cruises and Windstar Cruises all using the port.

“Cruise passengers choose Stockholm for all it has to offer as Scandinavia’s premier travel destination, whether it be food, museums, design, shopping or music,” she said. “Thanks to its compact size, the city is the perfect cruise destination for day trippers as well as turnarounds.”

She added: “Stockholm’s hotels and attractions are generally considered ‘high class’, and the city itself gets very high customer satisfaction ratings on shore excursions.
